Summary

Responsible for protecting the public from zoonotic diseases and animal bites, as well as investigate nuisances caused by animals. Also responsible for enforcing animal related city ordinances and state laws throughout the community.

Target Hiring Range: $23.75 - $30.85 DOQ

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect and permit animal care facilities and stores, enforce animal related city ordinances and state laws regarding rabies control.

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of field officers responsible for providing animal control services within the Animal Control Field Operations. Provide timely, accurate and thorough Performance Reviews for supervised employees.

  • Set schedules and assigns workload for other Field Animal Services Officers (ASO), provide quality control and reporting; prepare Field Operations statistical reports.

  • Provide guidance on enforcement questions and assist with dangerous animal evaluations.

  • Investigation and inspection of animal nuisances including bites and animal cruelty and issue citations and notices to owners for the mistreatment of animals

  • Participate in the selection of Animal Services staff; provide or coordinate field officers staff training;

  • work with field officers to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.

  • May provide educational materials and speak to the community about animal services including maintaining daily contact with various area rescue organizations and volunteer groups

  • Administer animal injections which include humane euthanasia

  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing Field Operations services; implement policies and procedures.

  • Thoroughly investigate all bites requesting the animal be deemed dangerous per city ordinance; testify in the court of law including administrative hearings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • 5 years animal control services

  • Department of State Health Services Basic Euthanasia Certification

  • Advanced Animal Services Officer

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • 5-8 years in animal control services.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word)

  • Knowledge of city ordinances and state laws as it relates to animal control

  • Skill in completing sworn affidavits

  • Ability to prioritize and manage work load

  • Ability to work under moderate stress

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • Department of State Health Services Basic Euthanasia Certification

  • Advanced Animal Services Officer

  • Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works in an outdoor environment responding to calls for service in the field. Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards; Shelter work required.
